Mamdani's lecture focuses on the question of how best to respond to extreme violence that has characterized African civil wars. A comparative discussion of Nuremberg trials and the negotiations that led to the post-apartheid transition in South Africa provides a basis for contrasting justice as criminal and justice as political.
