The Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies presents the 21st Annual Margolis Lecture

After Nuremberg: The Historical Significance of the South African Transition

with Mahmood Mamdani,
Professor of Government and Anthropology, Columbia University | Director, Makerere Institute of Social Research, Kampala, Uganda | Foreign Policy and Prospect Magazine "Top 20 Public Intellectual"

Friday, November 15, 2013
3:30-5:00 p.m.
Humanities Instructional Building (HIB), Room 100

Mamdani's lecture focuses on the question of how best to respond to extreme violence that has characterized African civil wars. A comparative discussion of Nuremberg trials and the negotiations that led to the post-apartheid transition in South Africa provides a basis for contrasting justice as criminal and justice as political.

Co-sponsored with the UCI African American Studies Program, School of Law, Center for the Study of Democracy, Department of Anthropology, and International Studies Public Forum
