In recent decades, economists have made important contributions to the study of religion. This talk will explore an economic perspective on Islamic movements, which grew in scale and influence over the same period. Several outstanding puzzles will be addressed: Where lie the origins of the contemporary Islamic revival? Why are Islamic organizations so effective at collective action, including public goods provision, political opposition and violent rebellion? What role is played by religious symbols, especially veiling among Muslim women? Why has political Islam been successful in some countries but not others? How do we understand religious terrorism and what of its future?
