UCI School of Social Sciences

Dear CIHA blog readers,

We at The CIHA Blog have been paying close attention to the discourse surrounding the causes, consequences, and images of the current famine in the Horn of Africa. Once again, we believe it is necessary to look more deeply into the actual suffering of people as well as the construction of the "emergency imaginary" (Calhoun et al) that surrounds the current famine. In our latest post, "The 'Emergency Imaginary,' Somalia, and Representations of Africa," we provide you with a selection of pieces that probe these discourses and debates. We hope that you will suggest additional resources and let us know what you think of the important issues raised by these discussions.

With your help, we are striving to create a growing forum to address the many contours and perspectives within ongoing debates about humanitarianism in Africa. Please help us grow (we now have a readership of approximately 1000 people across Africa, North America, Europe, and parts of Asia) by sharing our site with interested friends and colleagues, and letting us know!

Please also check out our In the News and Opportunities sections -- there are a number of new opportunities listed.

Sincerely,

Cecelia Lynch
