THE 19TH ANNUAL MARGOLIS LECTURE
ABOUT THE SPEAKERJack Foust Matlock, Jr. is a 35-year career veteran of the United States Foreign Service and was the country's ambassador to the Soviet Union when the Cold War ended (1986-1991). Matlock has held academic posts since 1991, including George F. Kennan Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton (1996-2001), and Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor in the Practice of International Diplomacy at Columbia University (1991-1996) where he currently is an adjunct professor of international and public affairs. He is the author of Reagan and Gorbachev: How the Cold War Ended; Superpower Illusions: How Myths and False Ideologies Led America Astray - and How to Return to Reality; and Autopsy on an Empire: The American Ambassador's Account of the Collapse of the Soviet Union. In his talk, Matlock will discuss the forces that brought about the end of the Cold War and provide personal insight on foreign policy lessons learned that are still important today. His talk commemorates the upcoming 20th anniversary of the end of the Cold War.
