August Headlines Vargas awarded fellowship to study Mexican American women in music ![]() Deborah R. Vargas, Chicano/Latino studies professor, has received a $40,000 Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in support of her research which examines historical configurations of citizenship, nation, gender, sexuality and race through a feminist analysis of twentieth century Mexican American women singers and musicians. As part of her fellowship, Vargas will spend the 2007-2008 academic year at the University of California, Los Angeles with host institution mentor Chon Noriega, Professor and Director of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, while completing final revisions of her manuscript tentatively titled "Decolonial Divas: Gender, Sexuality and Nation in the Making of Texas-Mexican-American Music." ![]() the nation for NSF funding Over the past five years (6/02-6/07), the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded 17 research grants to UC Irvine sociology faculty members and graduate students - a total that collectively places the department among the top sociology departments in the nation with respect to total NSF grants awarded within the five year period, says Calvin Morrill, sociology professor and former department chair. Read on... ![]() Professor Alejandro Morales to receive Luis Leal Book Award Alejandro Morales, Chicano/Latino studies professor and novelist, is the 2007 recipient of the Luis Leal Award for Distinction in Chicano/Latino Literature. Sponsored by the University of California - Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, and the Santa Barbara Book Council, the award recognizes Morales' contributions to Chicano/Latino literature and his accomplishments as a major American writer. Read on... ![]() Francesca Polletta, associate professor of sociology, is the recipient of the American Sociological Association's (ASA) section on Collective Behavioral/Social Movements 2007 Outstanding Book Award for her title, It Was Like A Fever. Selected from among 28 nominated books, the honor recognizes Polletta's significant contribution to the "culturalist" approach to collective action and social movements, says Rhys Williams, University of Cincinnati sociology professor and chair of the award committee.
