April Headlines Taagepera awarded $75,000 Johan Skytte Prize for work in political scienceRein Taagepera, political science professor emeritus at UC Irvine, has been awarded the Johan Skytte Prize for his analysis of the function of electoral systems in representative democracy. The Skytte Foundation, based at Uppsala University in Sweden, annually awards the prize to the scholar who has made the most valuable contribution to political science. As the 2008 award winner, Taagepera joins the company of 13 prestigious past recipients, seven of whom are past presidents of the American Political Science Association. Read On... Reischauer Lecture Series April 16-18. White, social science professor emeritus, has been named San Francisco State University's 2008 Alumnus of the Year. He will be honored May 24 at the university's 107th annual commencement. Read On... Berg awarded grant to study new theory in human auditory processing Bruce Berg, cognitive sciences professor, has received a $355,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study a possible new theory in auditory processing which could lead to advances in hearing aid technology. Using laboratory sound tests, Berg will collect data to determine whether the human auditory system is comprised of a solitary peripheral filterbank - as is currently believed - or multiple filterbanks in the processing of sound. Varzi to speak at London conference honoring Iranian filmmakerRoxanne Varzi, anthropology assistant professor, will be one of two featured speakers at a conference in London honoring internationally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker, Rakhshan Bani-Etemad on April 19, 2008. Varzi's talks will focus on the role of women in post-war Iranian society as depicted in Etemad's films "Gilaneh" and "The May Lady," which Varzi showed at the UC Irvine Film and Media Center's Iranian Film Fest in 2006. UCI's Mock Trial team finishes strong in national competitionComing off their second place finish in February's regional championships, UC Irvine's senior Mock Trial team headed to St. Paul, Minnesota on April 4 to take part in the association's National Championship Tournament. One of only 64 qualifying teams, the trip marked the first ever national appearance by the UCI team which was started just three short years ago. Read On...
