January Headlines  Rosa Noyola receives 2007-08 Frank Lynch Transfer ScholarshipRosa Noyola, a fourth year political science and English major, is the 2007-08 recipient of the Frank Lynch Transfer Scholarship. Offered for the second year in a row within the School of Social Sciences, the $1000 award will support Noyola's honors research on local enforcement of federal immigration policy. Read On...  Ballestero receives $10,000 grant from UC Irvine Urban Water Research CenterAndrea Ballestero, second year anthropology graduate student, is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the UC Irvine Urban Water Research Center. The award, coupled with recently received fellowships from the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs at UC Irvine and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, supports her dissertation research which has taken her to Costa Rica for the winter quarter where she is studying a small coastal community's innovative system of water pricing based on the purchasing power of the people. Morales named to board of California Council for Humanities Alejandro Morales, Chicano/Latino studies professor and novelist, has been named to a three-year term as board member with the California Council for the Humanities. A state non-profit organization, CCH sponsors programs and grants aimed at strengthening and fostering better communication among communities in California. Morales will join roughly 20 additional board members in awarding CCH grants and administering the organization's policies. Read On...  Bernard Grofman selected as inaugural Jack W. Peltason Endowed ChairBernard Grofman, political science professor and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, will be the inaugural Jack W. Peltason Endowed Chair. Established in November 2007 with a $1 million anonymous donation, the Endowed Chair honors former UC President and UC Irvine Chancellor, Jack W. Peltason. The news comes on the heels of Grofman's recent appointment as the new director of the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD), a UCI center with more than 40 participating faculty members. A natural-born leaderChetan Chowdhry's experience as a UCI undergraduate changed dramatically his sophomore year, when he enlisted in the campus's Alternative Break program and spent a week helping restore habitat in Saguaro National Park in Arizona. Seeing his fellow students perform "good work" proved so gratifying, he began finding all kinds of ways to help others - instead of "staying at home, wasting time in front of the TV." Now in his fourth year, Chowdhry has devoted much of his time to service activities, earning him the student Living Our Values Award for fall 2007. Representative for Ayatollah Sistani visits UC IrvineSayyid Mohammed Kashmiri, the North American representative for key Iraqi religious leader Ayatollah Sistani, visited UC Irvine on Thursday, January 24 to discuss with students, faculty, staff and community members Ayatollah Sistani's vision for reconstructing Iraq. Speaking through his interpreter in his native Arabic language, Kashmiri met informally over lunch with students and faculty and later gave a formal address to a packed auditorium where he touched on key issues of religion and conflict in the Middle East.
