Ballestero PhotoBallestero receives $10,000 grant from UC Irvine Urban Water Research Center
Andrea Ballestero, second year anthropology graduate student, is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the UC Irvine Urban Water Research Center. The award, coupled with recently received fellowships from the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs at UC Irvine and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, supports her dissertation research which has taken her to Costa Rica for the winter quarter where she is studying a small coastal community's innovative system of water pricing based on the purchasing power of the people. Alejandro Morales, Chicano/Latino studies professor and novelist, has been named to a three-year term as board member with the California Council for the Humanities. A state non-profit organization, CCH sponsors programs and grants aimed at strengthening and fostering better communication among communities in California. Fourth-year student Chetan Chowdhry spearheads service projects on campus Chetan Chowdhry's experience as a UCI undergraduate changed dramatically his sophomore year, when he enlisted in the campus's Alternative Break program and spent a week helping restore habitat in Saguaro National Park in Arizona. Seeing his fellow students perform "good work" proved so gratifying, he began finding all kinds of ways to help others - instead of "staying at home, wasting time in front of the TV." 3 Nobel laureates to honor UCI's Duncan Luce
From the OC Register on Jan. 25, 2008: Three recent winners of the Nobel Prize in economics will visit UC Irvine today and Saturday to honor mathematician-psychologist Duncan Luce, who shook the economics world 50 years ago with a landmark book on game theory. Game theory is the mathematical study of conflict and interaction among people. Luce and his co-author, Howard Raiffa, laid out some of the most basic principles and insights about the field in their book, "Games and Decisions: Introductions and Critical Survey."
