Dear friends,

It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of UC Irvine’s Lunar New Year celebrations this year. The Year of the Tiger is complicated: the tiger is fierce and brave when facing adversity and helps expunge the world of evil. But the tiger also has to be humble lest its powerful personality get the better of it. So too we approach the new year with humility. Out of an abundance of caution, we are not proceeding with large gatherings at this time due to the highly contagious Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The School of Social Sciences at UC Irvine has been welcoming the community to celebrate Lunar New Year on our campus since 2016. What began as a way to uplift the spirits of our students who were feeling homesick during this celebration of family, fortune, and, yes, lots and lots of food, quickly turned into a massive festival that has brought thousands to the campus.

To all our donors and sponsors, thank you so much for your ongoing commitment and support. We could not have made Lunar New Year at UC Irvine such a signature event without your assistance.

We will keep the spirit alive! We invite you to submit photos and videos online showcasing how you and your loved ones celebrate Lunar New Year. We will randomly select 10 individuals from the submitted works to receive $25 gift cards. Final submissions will be shared with all on our websites and social platforms.

We also offer you a range of Year of the Tiger Zoom backgrounds to include in all of your upcoming meetings and virtual gatherings.

And, like the tiger, once we overcome this period of adversity, we strive to be back in 2023, bigger and better, for the Year of the Rabbit!

Xīnnián hǎo!
