Charles A. Lave, professor emeritus of economics, was one of the first faculty members in the School of Social Sciences and an innovative and highly recognized researcher in transportation economics and energy use. Charlie served the campus widely in service and leadership roles in the department of economics, within the School, and on the campus. He helped establish the Institute for Transportation Studies and the Transportation Sciences graduate program, was active in advisory roles in the design of all of the Social Sciences buildings to include the new Social and Behavioral Sciences Building now in progress, and was instrumental in the establishment of University Hills Housing. Charlie was also passionate in supporting the achievements of his students and his colleagues. He had strong commitment to the social network and the common good, was the instigator of regular lunch discussion groups, and shared his love for travel and oriental carpets.
