Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy can be summarized in four simple words: education is guided discovery. I believe that linguistics is in an ideal position to emphasize discovery in the classroom because it is an interdisciplinary science that focuses on the source of all human achievement, language. While there are some definite obstacles faced by linguistics courses, my experience suggests that these can be overcome through a little creativity on the part of the teacher in bringing in materials that students can connect with, and through a problem based approach called backward design.
