Moments of Truth

A documentary film on peaceful political change in Malawi, 1992-1994

MAlawian child
In 1994, the small African country Malawi succeeded in overthrowing their dictator through a peaceful revolt. The Public Affairs Committee, the countries primary provider of civic education, has invited our documentary film team to record the individual stories of the people that were a part of the peaceful revolution. Not only will this preserve an incredible piece of history, but it will help Malawian people to tell their stories and inspire them to once again find hope within themselves. They need the power of sharing their stories to reinspire them to find hope and courage to stand up again and take the initiative for their lives.

To help us help them

The reason we are coming to you with this project is, that we have had many positive responses from foundations and organizations that normally support this type of educational project, however by their internal rules are not allowed to support film documentaries in general or in this region. The reason for this is that film productions are normally too expensive. Although everyone knows how effective films are for civic education in the less media saturated, rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa. A documentary film is a major event people travel miles to see and it is sometimes one of the only ways to broadly reach (without massive manpower involved) the mostly illiterate population, which can not make use traditional written civic education material.

Therefore we ask you if you would be able to support this remarkable and important project, before it is too late. Many of the men and women who were involved in the peaceful revolution towards democracy are now quite old and may die in the near future (many already have unfortunately) taking with them the hope filled story of peaceful change and responsibility for their own country.

Our team of media professionals is donating their time and skills to this project to make it financially viable and only ask for funding to finance equipment and distribution cost. So far through many donations and personal contributions we have been able to finish the filming in the county but are lacking the funds for editing and distribution. We believe that even $20,000 would be enough to finish the project and ensure distribution in cooperation with our local partners to about half of the population of Malawi with in a year.

Would you consider helping us to inspire 12 million people in Malawi and to revive the memory of the possibility of peaceful change again, which has the potential to spark change in the neighboring countries in Africa and in to the whole world.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter. An early version of a short film introducing the project can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaPtHcv1JUM
