Graduate Student Conference 2010
"Cuban Counterpoints" is a UC wide, interdisciplinary graduate student conference and workshop to be held at UC Berkeley, April 16 and 17, 2010. In keeping with the event's hybrid character we encourage submissions of abstracts and/or proposals in a various range of formats and styles: standard academic papers, informal presentations, dissertation summaries or prospecti, etc.
Faculty from a range of disciplines (literature, sociology, ethnomusicology, anthropology, medicine, biology, education, and more) throughout the UC system will be on hand to serve as respondents, discussion leaders, and active participants.
In addition to student presentations, round table discussions will be held with faculty and student participation to answer both discipline specific and more general questions about such topics as how to conduct research in Cuba, travel to Cuba and within the country, negotiating bureaucratic channels and archives, making contacts with archivists and other academic networking, etc.
Once selected, all presentation drafts will be available for download and online discussion at the conference/workshop website (please see below).
All participants will be expected to read the available drafts and come to the event prepared to offer helpful commentary, criticism, and/or questions, and to remain active in discussion.
Invited student and faculty presenters and respondents traveling to Berkeley from outside the Bay Area will receive complimentary guest accommodations at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza (http://hotelshattuckplaza-px.trvlclick.com/), within walking distance of the UC Berkeley campus, as well as travel reimbursements. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for on both days.
Please email Tom McEnaney or Maki Tanaka at uccuba@bspace.berkeley.edu to submit abstracts/proposals, gain access to the conference/workshop website, or pose other general queries about the event.
