Research Tips

One of the most important activities you would want to be involved in during your undergraduate years is research. Not only does it open doors of opportunities for graduate schools and other careers, but it is an extremely fulfilling and rewarding experience once all is said and done. Being a member of SIOP will help you in this regard by amplifying your interest in research; it will even produce interest if you aren't at ease with the subject yet.

Research, at first, may sound a bit overwhelming. However, there are many forms of assistance to help guide you in the right path. Here are just a few tips to get you started:

Talk to your Research Coordinator about research.

It could be about anything: generating interest for your own benefit, helping come up with research topics, getting assistance finding mentors/professors for your study, or just to talk about anything research related. The Research Coordinator exists to oversee your success in these endeavors.

Find topics you are generally interested in.

Narrow down your topics to empirical or observational questions. Remember, you do not have to restrict yourself to "Human Resource" or "Industrial/Organizational Psychology" related studies. One of the great aspects of psychology in general is the ability to study in one particular field and have it relate to other fields; topics such as motivation, stress, personality theory, social cognition, memory, and even abnormal psychology/pathology are all viable routes of research to participate in and can be related to applied psychology.

Research about research.

Once you've opened a dialogue with your Research Coordinator, he or she will most likely direct you to act upon your newfound interest. One is to get a second take on your topics while the other is to see meticulously how the research process occurs for an undergraduate student. Both of these concerns can be handled at the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (or UROP), where you can talk to a research counselor about how to approach your research topics, as well as educate you about the research process.

Consider your research options.

There are many ways to begin research once you have your topic set in stone. First is to consider a campus faculty mentor (usually a professor). The website http://faculty.uci.edu/ has a quick search of faculty here at UCI by name, school, and research interests. Find a professor whom you'd think would take up your research offer. Once again, don't be worried about professors not being aligned perfectly with your research topic. Many professors are open to new things or new perspectives on their own studies; however, there are limits on the approach, of course (for example, you do not want to do approach Dr. XYZ, who primarily studies artificial intelligence and robotics, about your topic on gender differences in the workplace). There are also non-faculty and off-campus opportunities to consider as well.
