RESEARCH

UCI is noted internationally for its rich academic programs and the quality of its faculty. The campus' long standing commitment to undergraduate education yields strong programs across all academic disciplines. The School of Social Sciences endorses an array of research programs for undergraduate students to pursue during their college careers. These programs are comprehensive and offer a hands-on experience for undergraduates to conduct research and attain a deeper understanding of the process. Furthermore, these experiences enhance their academic qualifications and make them more competitive candidates for graduate school.

UCI RESEARCH PROGRAMS

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
This program provides the opportunity and access to professional environments conducive to research advancement and career skills development. UROP also helps undergraduates to receive funding for their research. UROP hosts an annual symposium and publishes an undergraduate research journal every Spring quarter.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
Provides funding for UCI undergraduates from all disciplines who are conducting summer research projects or creative activities under the guidance of UCI faculty members.

SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SAEP)
This program was established in 1991 and was designed to enhance specific analytical and research skills and to prepare participants for graduate school. SAEP is an intense, five-week residential summer program. It exposes the students to analytical writing, statistics, and numerous graduate school workshops. Each year's cohort is comprised of approximately 18-20 students.

Social Sciences Research Participation Lab
Each quarter there are many classes which offer extra-credit points to students who choose to participate in research experiments through the Human Subjects Pool.

RESEARCH EDUCATION ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM (REAP) (back to top)
The objective of this program is to introduce undergraduate students to the theories, principles, and methods of conducting quantitative and qualitative research in Social Sciences. The program will acquaint students with general issues involved in conducting research, including: ethics, validity, reliability, and instrument construction. More specifically, through a series of workshops and dialogues, REAP will teach students about the various components of research, including: conducting a literature review, formulation of research questions, statement of hypotheses, theory, selection of subjects, research design, and data collection methods. Throughout the year and with supervision, students will generate and develop their own research interests and produce an original research proposal in their field of specialization. The program will also consist of three tiers that will facilitate student growth through the different levels of research. The program will allow students to become strong scientist-practitioners and will result in a certification of research.

Research Awards Given to the School of Social Sciences
The School of Social Sciences offers several competitive scholarships to students committed to academic excellence. To be eligible for all of the following scholarships, you must be a declared major within the School of Social Sciences.

The California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP)
The California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) in Science, Engineering, and Math, is a statewide initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The objective of CAMP is to increase the quality and quantity of underrepresented students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) at the University of California (UC), and to make a substantial contribution to the SEM education pipeline. The CAMP program began at UC Irvine in 1991; currently, eight UC campuses participate in the program. –CAMP Initiative
CAMP Summer Science Scholars present their research in preparation for the two upcoming national conferences, SACNAS- October 21 – 24 and MAES, in October. In addition to the students who stay at UCI and conduct summer research, all students who have conducted research at other institutions, Sandia National Lab, Cal Tech, Berkeley, NIH, come and present their research at this symposium. Mexican American Engineers and Scientists Conference. These scholars may also present at American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, American Mathematical Society, American Physical Society CAMP Undergraduate Symposium and UROP Conference.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program - The University of Rochester
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.

Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP)
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP) offers undergraduates across the United States mentored internship experiences at NASA Centers and research support facilities. The NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program is NASA’s largest nationwide internship program.

Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory Undergraduate Student Fellowships
The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory occupies a special niche in the history of twentieth-century biology and medicine. Only a few biological laboratories exist dedicated to basic research in a marine environment. MDIBL’s mission is to study marine organisms to discover mechanisms of biological significance that advance human health. Scientists at MDIBL carry out this mission using marine species as tools for basic investigation in physiology, molecular and cellular biology and toxicology. MDIBL is internationally known for discoveries leading to advances in cardiovascular, lung and kidney disease.

OUT OF STATE SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES (back to top)

Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC)
Headquartered in the Midwest, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) is a consortium of the Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago. For half a century, these 12 world-class research institutions have advanced their academic missions, generated unique opportunities for students and faculty, and served the common good by sharing expertise, leveraging campus resources, and collaborating on innovative programs. Governed and funded by the Provosts of the member universities, CIC mandates are coordinated by a staff from its Champaign, Illinois headquarters.

The Nebraska Experiment Program to Stimulate Competitive Research
This is a statewide program supported by the National Science Foundation to Assist university faculty and students in developing competitive research programs in specifically targeted areas selected by a statewide committee appointed by the Governor. Open to students pursuing bachelor degrees in the area of science, engineering, mathematics or technology.

The University of Utah - Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)
The Department of Psychology at the University of Utah invites you to apply for our Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP-Psychology) for underrepresented students. The goal of SROP-Psychology is to increase the number of underrepresented students who enter Ph.D. programs in psychology, helping to diversify the field and broaden the range of perspectives.

University of Pennsylvania
Wharton SPUR is a unique program that will provide a select group of up to 10 highly motivated students an opportunity to design and perform in-depth research over a 10-week period in the summer under the guidance of some of Wharton’s preeminent faculty members

University of Kansas
The Madison & Lila Self Graduate Fellowship at the University of Kansas helps support summer Undergraduate Research Programs (URPs) and Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) programs. Promising undergraduate students have unique opportunities to be involved in research activities. The Self Graduate Fellowship helps support students and departments and also provides a professional development seminar for all campus REU students.

University of Maryland
The Summer Research Initiative (SRI) was created in 1999 by the Office of the Dean in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) and is supported by the Office of the Provost, the Graduate School, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the College. In addition, SRI is made possible, in part, by a grant from the National Science Foundation (AC-SBE AGEP). The program has a special emphasis on population groups underrepresented in the behavioral, social and economic science fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders).

University of Wisconsin Madison
The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers 11 Summer Research Opportunities to undergraduate students. It is a unique chance for undergraduates to work closely with faculty mentors and graduate students in their major discipline. Students accepted into research programs are matched with faculty whose expertise and interests match the student’s research interest. Students gain valuable skills for success in post-graduate studies and careers in their chosen field. Upon completing their summer research, students have the opportunity to present and receive reviews of their individual work.
