
How do I become a pending member of NSLS?
There are three was to become a pending member of NSLS:
1. Invitation:
Receive an invitation in the mail. Follow the directions on the invitation to sign up at the national website and pay your once in a lifetime dues. Then attend Orientation to get started on your requirements to be inducted and become a lifetime member of NSLS.
OR
2. Proof of GPA:
Email nsls.uci@gmail.com to setup an appointment with the Executive Administrator or one of the Co-Presidents to show your unofficial transcript to demonstrate a GPA of 3.0 or above. This appointment will be when you receive your registration code and pay your onetime fee online.
OR
3. Nomination Form: Complete a nomination form.
What are the basic steps towards lifetime membership?
Attendance at the following events allows a pending member to be inducted and become an Inducted member:
• Orientation
• Leadership Training Day
• 3 Speaker Events
• 3 consecutive Success Networking Team meetings
• 5 hours of Community Service
• Four hours of Fundraisers or Social Events
How long to I have to complete all of my requirements to be inducted?
You have until you graduate from UC Irvine to complete all the requirements to go from a pending member to a full lifetime member. All attendance must be turned in by week 6 of Spring Quarter the year you would like to be Inducted.
How do I get the stuff I paid for? (i.e., t-shirt, pin and certificate)
The money you paid to join was a lifetime membership fee. The membership items are to welcome you into the group once you've completed your requirements. You'll get the items at the induction ceremony.
I do Community Service with ___ can I use that for my 5 hours?
Yes. You are welcome to do Community Service with NSLS or with any other organization. If you are doing Community Service outside of NSLS events you will need to print and submit the Community Service form available under the Membership tab.
How do I check my progress?
For national requirements (Orientation, LTD, SNT, and Speaker Series) visit the national website Members Area, login,
and click the Membership Status icon to view your status.
For chapter requirements (Social Events, Fundraising Events, and Community Service) please send an email to nsls.uci@gmail.com with the subject as "Chapter Requirements Progress".
I joined ___ but I haven't attended any events. What do I do?
There are no fines or penalties for not attending events. You have until you graduate from UC Irvine to complete your requirements so you aren't required to attend a certain amount of events every quarter. In addition the membership dues are for life so there aren't any additional costs.
What are the requirements for Induction?
You need to have completed all national and chapter requirements by the Induction deadline which is typically week 6 of Spring Quarter.
What if I cannot attend the scheduled Orientation or Leadership Training Day?
These events are held at least once every quarter, close to the beginning of the quarter. Since everyone is allowed one calendar year to complete all of their requirements, hopefully you can attend next year.
What if I cannot attend the scheduled speaker events?
Speaker events are held at least once a week every quarter so there are plenty of chances to attend.
Are NSLS events on campus?
Orientation, Leadership Training Day, Speaker Series events are all held in various buildings on campus. Most Socials are on campus, but some may be off campus at places like Corona del Mar Beach. Nearly all Community Service are off campus.
Can I get a ride to an off campus NSLS event?
As it gets closer to the event, the Executive Board will arrange rides for anyone who informs us ahead of time that they would like one.

What does it mean to be a presidential member?
Students who have a 3.3 GPA or above upon joining NSLS are recognized as presidential members. These students will receive a presidential seal on their membership certificate as well as a personalized letter from the national president. If a student raises their GPA to 3.3 or above during the time they are working towards induction, they become eligible for the presidential distinction. Contact the National Office to request a change in membership status.
I have been inducted. Now what?
Feel free to attend any NSLS event that catches your interest. Also we will be having events specifically for inducted members in the future. In addition you are welcome to apply for an executive board position or an intern position to assist the executive board when applications are available.
Do I have to pay the $85 membership fee every year?
No. The one time membership fee gives you lifetime membership.
What if I want a refund?
Any request made within 90 days of the initial payment will be granted a full refund. Anyone who requests a refund after the 90 day period will be denied. To request a refund email the National Office. In the email include your full name, school name, reason for requesting a refund, and the last 4 digits of the credit card you signed up with.
Excellence in Leadership Award Requirements
All members are eligible to achieve this award. To receive this award you must complete a total of six video conferences, six success networking team meetings and at leas five hours of community service. Once all of the requirements have been completed and logged on the national website, you are able to receive your award at the next Induction Ceremony.
Recipients Receive:
• Ability to list this achievement on their resume
• A letter send to your University President notifying them of your achievement
• An award certificate
• A personalized letter of recommendation from the President of the Society that references the award
• Recognition in the Society Newsletter and Online
• Eligibility for scholarships for the top submissions each year (1st place: $3,500; 2nd place: $2,000; 3rd place: $1,000)
Can I use the 5 hours of Community Service I did for Premium Membership towards the National Excellence in Leadership Award (NELA)?
Yes.
Can I use the 3 Speaker Series I did for General Membership towards the National Excellence in Leadership Award (NELA)?
Yes.
What happens if I miss a Success Networking Team (SNT) meeting?
It will be necessary to restart your SNT meetings in a new group since you must attend every meeting the week after you start to build upon your goal setting skills and support your group.
Can I complete the National Excellence in Leadership Award (NELA) after I get Inducted as a General or Premium Member?
Yes, members have until they graduate from UCI to complete NELA.
NOTE:
Any Community Service hours less than 5 hours will be logged by us, but not listed. Community Service completion is marked on the national website once all 5 hours are complete.
