LSPA introduced me to what graduate school was. Going into UCI I thought I would be able to have my own private practice upon graduation, LSPA taught me that in order to achieve that goal I would have to go to graduate school. In LSPA I learned about Dr.C's 5 pillars and had resources presented to me that would help me achieve each of the pillars. Not only did I gain the knowledge and tools to become a competitive graduate school applicant, through LSPA I also gained friendships that I am sure will be life long.

To incoming LSPA members I would encourage them to follow through with all the opportunities that LSPA presents to you. Sitting and listening to all the things you have to do in order to get into graduate school is scary, but if you start early and take it one step at a time, it is not that scary. At the same time, do not take on more than you can handle; make sure to always take care of yourself and maintain a healthy balance. If you give it your all, and try your hardest at whatever you do, you will not end up disappointed :).

Hello LSPA!

It's great to see the organization going strong and reaching out to alumni! As one of the founding members of LSPA and a past president, LSPA has a very special place in my heart. For me LSPA was a place to connect with other motivated Latina/os and allies to reach our common goals of attending graduate school and increasing mental health awareness in our community at large. I gained an amazing family from LSPA and I still remain connected to many of them.

For incoming LSPA members I would say use your college time to find your passion and determine what unique contribution you'd like to make to this world. When you figure this out, find a mentor and create an academic family as these two things will be invaluable on your journey toward your goals. Best of luck!

Working for a Criminal Background Company   LSPA gave me a number of helpful opportunities to expand my social network. It helped me build a great resume with experience from educational opportunities to internships and community service. It provided me with a close knit group of people who shared a similar background, but also a diverse group that i learned a lot from. The recommendations i have for LSPA members is to get involved with something you are interested in, don't limit yourself to one thing but be open to a few things. Stay focus and know that you are not alone in the academic experience but that you have an academic family through LSPA.

University of Souther Califronia

Master's of Social Work

LSPA was an instrumental part of my undergraduate experience at UC Irvine. In a nutshell, LSPA essentially my personal and educational foundation. It was here that I met among the most inspirational students of my college experience and it was these same individuals who essentially motivated me and guided me from the get- go.

For one, I learned the value in embracing my culture in my research pursuits, networking and working as a team as Board member. Also, LSPA was valuable in helping me prepare for my current graduate program. I really took to heart the five educational pillars, especially the importance of participating in internship experiences as it helped me recognize how important direct practice with individuals is for me as a community member and scholar. This in turn fueled my decision to pursue a Masters degree in Social Work prior to pursuing my lifelong goal of pursuing a doctoral degree.

As incoming LSPA members I really encourage you all to breathe and live the five educational pillars that are the part of our familia. I promise you they will truly transform and revitalize your experience at UC Irvine. Secondly, be courageous and pursue all of the available opportunities that are presented to you- whether it means leaving to another state or even country to pursue research opportunities or become involved in projects you might have the slightest interest in. Not only will they help you grow as a stronger person, but will also help you really refine your interests and help you become a more well- rounded individual. ¡Ánimo y adelante LSPA familia!
