LEADERSHIP

One of the most important attributes that a student can have when applying to Graduate school or for a job is leadership. Graduate schools and companies like to know that you have the ability to take control of a situation and that you are confident enough to undertake important responsibilities. The ability to delegate tasks and to direct people in need of direction will set you apart as a candidate. As a student here at UCI you should take advantage of some of the programs the university has to offer. Here we have listed some sites to help you in your future endeavors.

LEADERSHIP WEBSITES

SSARC Leadership Development Series Students learn of and examine the many leadership theories that affect organizations today.  Explore the many variables, conditions, styles, and levels of analysis of practical leadership in today's worklace and build an informed view of leadersip development.

National Society of Leadership and Success The SSARC hosts the UCIrvine chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success.  Students are invited by the chapter advisor to participate in a series of developmental workshops and seminars, afterwhich members receive exclusive membership and induction into this national community of leaders and professionals.

Leadership Development Workshops This program offers a variety of seminars, conferences and workshops to help students become leaders in their future endeavors. Speakers talk on topics such as Diversity and Leadership and Assessing your leadership style. The program runs throughout the year and a certificate is awarded upon completion.

Middle Earth Leadership Opportunities Middle Earth allows a high level of student involvement with things such as programming student events or Residential Advisor positions. Students get to partake in student affairs and are offered on campus housing (sometimes required) with their positions.

Mesa Court Leadership Opportunities Mesa court too allows student on-campus opportunities to get involved in first-year and transfer students' experience. Here you are also seen as a leader

Associated Students at the University of California Irvine (ASUCI) Get involved with student government by attending meetings or even running for office. Having a say in student affairs not only benefits you as you can make a difference but you learn leadership along the way.

The Center for Leadership Development This graduate school of management program allows students to attend lectures on how to become an effective leader. While offered for graduate students there are still lectures regarding leadership that you can attend.

Clubs and Organizations One way to get involved is to find a club that shares your interests and become a leader within that group. There are many different options to pick from, and if you can't find exactly what you're looking for, you could always just start your own club!

The Dean of Students All Leadership Conference This is a weekend program designed to expose students to important skills in becoming a leader.

OFF-CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES

 The UCDC Summer Internship Program

This program helps successful candidates find an internship in our nation's capitol. Students get to work in another part of the country while experiencing the democratic processes at work. Leadership skills are learned through practical work experience and being able to adapt to a new environment.

 The UCI Sacramento Internship Program

The Sacramento Internship Program at the University of California, Irvine is a program that gives outstanding UCI students an opportunity to intern in the California State Capital.  Based upon the huge success of the UCDC Summer Internship Program, the Sacramento Internship Program (SIP) was a natural step in the direction of developing an experiential learning opportunity in the California State Capital.  Sacramento is the center for California's growth not only politically, but also scientifically and economically. This program is designed to immerse students into the workings of state government while showing the important role that policy makers play in decisions that will affect all of California.  California has the fifth largest economy in the world, as well as being the largest and most diverse state. Interns will see why being a member of the California State legislature is one of the most highly regarded elected officials in the nation.
