INTERNSHIPS

WHY DO AN INTERNSHIP?

  1. EMPLOYMENT: Students completing internships stand out when job hunting for they will have some experience.

  2. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LEARNING: Internships are important and valuable for you get to design your own learning curriculum and get away from campus-based ones.  The student decides what he/she will learn, how to learn it , and how to evaluate it.

  3. THEORY INTO PRACTICE: An  internship experience can add meaning to academic study by giving you the chance to apply theories learned in the classroom to "real world" situations.

  4. AWARENESS THROUGH INCREASED COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: The student will develop an awareness of others' needs and a great understanding of his/her role and potential contributions to society.

  5. PERSONAL GROWTH: The student will grow from the experience.  Having to solve problems in unfamiliar situations can increase a student's self-confidence and self-esteem.

  6. HELPING HAND: It is nice to help oneself but helping others benefits the community and makes a difference.

  7. NEW ENVIRONMENT: An internship introduces the student to a new environment and the challenges and problems of a work setting.  The student will also learn to meaning of teamwork.

  8. RESEARCH: It's an opportunity for experimentation and exploration of new and old academic and career interests.

NON-PAID INTERNSHIP DATABASE LISTINGS

REQUIREMENTS

The SSARC internship program is offered during all quarters of the regular academic year as well as during both Summer Sessions I and II. Students intern at either community service based, non-profit organizations or private corporations.

Total Hours for Quarter Weekly Hours Credit Earned
100 10 4 Units
50 5 2 Units

Weekly hours listed are guidelines but not required--the only required amount for the class is the total amount for the quarter. This total hour requirement is true for Summer Sessions students as well.

FINDING AN INTERNSHIP

Finding an internship and contacting the site is up to the student. However, we do provide listings for several positions in the area that students are welcome to use. Click on the "SSARC Internship Database Listings" link on the frame above to look through our current listings. Per university guidelines, students may not earn course credit for paid internships.

It is recommended that students secure their internship before the class starts. Any internship credit from firms must be turned in by third week. Prepare for an internship and plan accordingly.

INTERNSHIP CLASSES

Once they have found an internship, students must attend a bi-weekly class (e.g. classes only meet weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) that is run by Dr. Castellanos, the SSARC director.
