One of the most important attributes that a student can have when applying to Graduate school or

 

The SSARC has the only Social Science-specific graduate school information library on campus.

Our library has graduate bulletins from both out of state and California schools.

 

We also have information and test registration packets on all of the applicable graduate exams. In addition, we have several independent research books and guides (i.e. The Princeton Review and Petersen's) to assist you in choosing a program.

GRADUATE SCHOOL TIMELINE 

 

The summer before your last year

  - Request admissions and Financial Aid applications from the schools to which you plan on

    applying.

 

 - Study for the appropriate entrance examinations (e.g. GRES, LSATS, etc.)

 

  - Register for these entrance examinations

 

  - Check applications for deadlines

 

September – October

  - Take the entrance examinations.

 

  - Contact people at the institutions to which you plan to apply for useful information.

 

  - Talk to Graduate school recruiters on campus and in the surrounding area.

 

  - Start the process for getting your letters of recommendation (see the SSARC to help you

    with our Letters of Recommendation service)

 

  - Start completing the applications.

 

  - Begin writing the necessary essays for your applications (e.g. personal statement)

 

November – December

  - Take any tests you did not complete in the fall.

 

  - Secure your letters of recommendation (remember, some professors can get very busy

    and forget about them, so you must keep diligent!)

 

  - Check on transcripts and letters of rec. to make sure they were sent.

 

  - Prepare financial statements.

 

  - Send out the admissions applications

          ***Some schools deadlines can be later in the year. Make sure you check!

 

  - Try to visit the schools to which you are applying and talk to faculty and staff. Personal

     visits help a lot!

 

January

  - Last chance for taking the appropriate examinations!! (For some schools it may already

     be too late)

 

  - Check with each school to see if they have received materials, including:

1.  Test scores

2.  Letters of recommendation

3.  Financial statements

… If some materials are missing, you may be eliminated from selection!

 

February and on…

  - Wait to hear from schools on whether you were accepted.

 

  - Continue to make contact with representatives from the schools to which you applied to

     check on the progress of you application.
