Frequently Asked Questions by Prospective Members

Q: What does CSLP stand for? What is it?

CSLP stands for the Community Service and Leadership Program. CSLP is an extension program of the Social Sciences Academic Resource Center (SSARC) and is a recognized student program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) through the School of Social Sciences.

Q: What is required of a CSLP member?

7 Service Projects, 7 Workshops (4 Leadership/Professional, 3 Academic), 2 Leadership Analysis, Attendance at 3 out of 4 of the mandatory biweekly general meetings.

Q: What kinds of community service projects is CSLP involved with?

We are partnered with many different types of community-based organizations around Orange County. Current volunteer events include HealthBridge Children's Hospital, The Orange County Rescue Mission's Village of Hope, Back to Natives, Mercy House Santa Ana Armory, and Second Harvest Food Bank.

Q: How do I join CSLP?

Applications are available during the Spring quarter of each academic year. We accept applications during the Spring and Summer for the following academic year. Applications are also accepted at the very beginning of the academic year (i.e. the first couple weeks of Fall quarter).

Q: What if I find out about CSLP mid-year or later in the year, after the application deadline has passed? Can I still join?

No, you must wait until the following year to fill out an application and join. If only a little time has elapsed after the application deadline (within the same quarter), you can petition to the board by making your request by emailing cslp@uci.edu and they will decide. However, you may still participate in service projects through the same RSVP process, but keep in mind that if an event fills up, CSLP members will be given priority. Our goal is to attract people who are genuinely interested in participating in community service and have similar interests, qualities, and values.

Q: Can only majors in the Social Sciences join?

No, anyone of any major can join the program!

Q: What if I am away for a quarter (e.g. study abroad, UCDC, etc.)

Depending on your specific circumstances, you may have to make-up the workshops or projects, or you may be able to petition-out of them. Please email the board at cslp@uci.edu as soon as possible.

Beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year, "journal entries" are now worksheets. There are a couple questions listed as prompts and you should answer each one thoroughly. Journal entries mainly provide an opportunity for reflection after each service project, and act as a medium through which members can express their thoughts and feelings as well as evaluate their experience. Although the Community Service and Leadership Program is primarily focused on engaging and making a difference in the local community through service projects, a key component of the program is also leadership. Through the various workshops and the leadership analysis papers, CSLP seeks to link leadership theory with practice in the hopes that members will develop leadership skills that will empower them to serve more effectively in service projects as active and positive role models in the community.
