The UCI Community Service and Leadership Program (CSLP) provides undergraduate students opportunities to engage their community through service activities while preparing for their post-baccalaureate life. The program emphasizes an "others first" approach, encouraging service and steadfast dedication to making a difference in the local community and university campus. Students develop the leadership skills necessary to be positive role models and active participants in the community.
The Community Service and Leadership Program launched in the 2006 academic year at the University of California, Irvine. Through the collaboration of the Associate Dean of Social Sciences, Dr. Caesar Sereseres; the Director of Social Sciences Academic Research Center (SSARC) Dr. Jeanett Castellanos; and the Associate Director of the SSARC, Andrew Gonzales, the Community Service and Leadership Program was established. This program was brought about to provide students with the opportunity to broaden their academic knowledge while promoting service learning.
In its beginnings, the program was able to accomplish various projects within the community. The Orange County Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity's Village of Hope, as well as a project which allowed us to provide school supplies to children in Baghdad are just a few of the previous projects that members of CSLP participated in. Numerous workshops were held in order to further student's knowledge of a variety of non-profit organizations.
The Community Service and Leadership Program (CSLP) transforms undergraduate students into positive change agents in the community by enabling student collaboration on collective service projects while encouraging civic engagement and leadership development.
Our purpose is to equip members with the knowledge and skills necessary for community change and post-baccalaureate success; empower members with service-learning and leadership opportunities; and encourage members through individualized program planning, mentorship, and network support.
