Complicating and confounding efforts to reform the country's immigration laws are widespread portrayals of Mexican immigrants as a threat to national culture and unity, Leo Chavez, an author and anthropology professor at the University of California, Irvine, said Tuesday night in a lecture at University of the Pacific.
