On Thursday, February 24th, frog design will host the Mobile Frontier, a discussion of the future of mobile money with Jan Chipchase, Executive Creative Director at frog design and Dr. Bill Maurer, Director of The Institute for Money, Technology, and Financial Inclusion.

Over half the world’s population lives without reliable banking institutions. But, if the huge success of Safaricom’s M-PESA in Kenya is any indication, mobile money could put a bank in every pocket. And not just for those in emerging markets.

Jan will reveal the findings from his recent field research trip to Afghanistan where he explored the impact of mobile banking in a country with 12.5 million cellular subscriptions but no formal financial infrastructure. Jan and Bill will discuss the lessons that can be drawn from Afghanistan for the design of mobile money services around the world and the innovations it can enable.

Jan will also share his new book Mobile Money, Afghanistan: Notes from the Field, a highly visual behind-the-scenes look at his research journey.
