High School Conference

Welcome

It is our privilege to welcome you to the Nineteenth Annual Session of the University of California-Irvine Model United Nations High School Conference. This year’s conference will be held on May 21-22, 2011 at our prestigious campus with a wide range of committees to generate the interest of the delegates. In previous years, approximately thirty schools from around the nation participated in our conference, which was well received by the attending delegates. Our mission this year is to hold a conference of the highest caliber and to meet the expectations of all delegates and advisors. In order to do so, we encourage professionalism and preparation amongst our staff to ensure that all delegates experience a competitive and interesting debate.

Our mission is to host a conference of the highest caliber and to meet all expectations of the participants and advisors. We understand and emphasize that our conference’s success depends on the cooperation of the schools attending our conference. Thus, we encourage communication between our conference and your programs in order to assist each other and reduce confusion in any way we can. In addition to a research page tailored to help Model United Nations students with country and topic research, there will also be an online service available to your delegates if they need help researching or advice about the conference. They may email this service for assistance at ucimunsg@gmail.com.

Theme: “Picking up the Pieces: Rebuilding Post-Conflict Society“

This year, all committees and topics are based on the theme “Picking up the Pieces: Rebuilding Post-Conflict Society”. Our theme reflects the necessary role of international organizations, like the United Nations, to assist the victims of conflict. States emerging from external or internal conflicts often are; afflicted with unstable governments, unable to provide needed services to their citizens, unable or unwilling to reconcile conflicting parties, or unable to clean up and rebuild. Interstate and Intrastate fighting is an unfortunate occurrence for all involved and it frequently hits people and places that are the least well equip to handle the aftermath. Conflicts do not only lead to losses among combatants and infrastructure of conflicting parties, they can devastate civilian populations, the environment and create immense public health and regional stability problems. Timely international assistance can be the difference between a society successfully reemerging from the vestiges of conflict stronger and more prosperous then ever or it remaining devastated and rife with ongoing problems.

It is our hope the theme, reflected in individual committee topics will serve as a learning experience for all those involved and foster discussion about recovery, reconciliation and prevention of conflict.
