 ADVOCACY (W)

This course provides an interactive opportunity to explore various methods of oral and written advocacy in a small-group setting.  Legal topics emphasizing public education provide a framework for team-based arguments and extensive class feedback on effective presentation techniques.

Class participation accounts for a significant portion of the course grade; class members are required to attend all class sessions, prepare two argumentative papers, and participate routinely in class exercises, team debates, and additional team meetings.

Students also receive upper division writing credit.  Please note that this is an extremely demanding course requiring a significant time commitment.

COURSE ENROLLMENT INFORMATION:

  • Prerequisites:

    • Completion of "Political Science 71A: Introduction to Law"

    • Completion of the UCI Lower Division writing requirement

  • *Restricted Enrollment:

    • Please contact the Forum Director prior to the start of the quarter to request a spot in this very small class (requests are evaluated along several factors)

    • You may also attend class on the first day to see if any remaining spots are available

  • Watch WebSOC carefully; this course is only offered once each year

  • This is a cross-listed course -- students can register for either:

    • Political Science --TBA-- (Sellgren)

    • Social Science --TBA-- (Sellgren)

COURSE SUBSTITUTION:

Summer 2012 only!

Students who complete the "Political Science 171AW: Law & Society (Sellgren)" upper division writing course during Summer Session II (2012) will have exposure to the Advocacy-style debate format and may therefore use the summer course as a substitute for the actual Advocacy course.  No advance approval for this substitution is required.

  • No other substitutions available for this course.
