Some funding sources accept applications directly from you, the student, and then send the money directly to you as well. Other Agencies, e.g., NSF, IGCC, etc., require institutional ("Contracts & Grants") oversight in the application for and the disbursement of
funds. Your Department Manager is the one who will work with you in this process.
In other cases, agencies send letters to faculty and/or to deans asking for nominations. Here's a reason to maintain good relations and an open line of communication with your faculty.
The earlier you obtain the application materials and begin the application process, THE BETTER!! Three to four months in advance is recommended.
Your Department Manager should be your first point of contact in this process and can assist you with the pre-award, application submission processMake an appointment with your Department Manager about 3 months in advance of the application due date since there many steps to the approval process.
