| 1. THREE QUICK BUT IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT FUNDING AGENCIES: |
Many funding agencies accept applications directly from you, the student, and then send the money directly to you as well.
Other Agencies, e.g., NSF, IGCC, etc. require institutional (UCI) oversight in the application process and in the disbursement of funds. Your Department Manager should be your first point of contact in this process. Make an appointment with your Department Manager who can assist you with the pre-award submission process. They'll need to get your application materials 4 weeks in advance of the agency's due date since there is much paperwork to process. Notify them early to make an appointment. Their contact information is below. [And, feel free to call me (Julie - Ext. 8498) as soon as you begin to think about applying for a fellowship, since I can advise you as to whether or not you'll need to go through the UCI channels.]
In other cases, agencies send letters to faculty and/or to deans asking for nominations. Here's a reason to maintain good relations and an open line of communication with your faculty.
| 2. HUMAN SUBJECTS PROTECTION INFORMATION for Student Researchers |
While most Social Science research is "exempt" or "expedited," an IRB number is still required for most funding applications. Also, if you ever wish to mention your research and UCI in the same breath, you'll definitely need IRB approval.
