No. Students apply directly to the department of choice through an electronic web server located in the Graduate Division in Central Administration. We do not require a separate application either to the School of Social Sciences or to the UC Irvine Graduate School.

All applications for admission are automatically considered for intramural financial support. (Our faculty rarely offer admission without a corresponding financial support package). Applicants are not required to apply separately for financial support consideration. Applications who wish to apply for need based grants or loans will need to file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Assistance) form through the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

No. In general a shorter statement is better received; candidates are urges to limit themselves to 750-1250 words (3-5 pages) with at least 500 usually needed to convey adequately one’s academic background, interest and goals. We do not require the statement to follow a set format.

Please include with your transcripts an English translation provided either by the school issuing the transcripts or a translation service. We do not require that international transcripts be evaluated for US equivalency.

Certainly, and in fact, a writing sample is required for applications to the Logic and Philosophy of Science program. Writing samples should be in the range of 10-15 pages. A resume may also be submitted, but is not required.

Not beyond the standard set of supplementary materials required. If additional material is desired, the applicant will be contacted by the Graduate Office staff or the appropriate graduate program director.

After first round admission offers are made, there may be subsequent offers of admission, depending upon the acceptance rate of those receiving a first round offer. Subsequent round offers, if made, are usually offered in the latter part of March.

Admission decisions are made during February and early March. Admission letter are usually sent before denial letters.

Initially, informally by email from graduate program directors. Afterward, you will receive a formal letter of acceptance signed by the dean of the School.

Applicants who are not accepted for admission may request reconsideration in writing addressed to the departmental graduate program director. However, these requests are very rarely approved. Applicants not offered admission may also reapply in the following year’s competition. Although a new application and fee will be required, the supplementary application material may be carried forward from one year to the next.
