Karen Leonard

With the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947 and the fall of the princely state of Hyderabad to India in 1948, the Hyderabadis began a global migration. Most left India during the 1960's when western countries liberalized their immigration laws.

Please join Professor Leonard as she tells the story of the Indo-Muslim Hyderabadis' loss of personal and national identities as a result of their migrations. Learn how their lives were affected by new state laws and policies, and how the Hyderabadis learned to interact on economic, political, linguistic, and religious levels with fellow citizens in their newly adopted lands.

Leonard received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. Prior to coming to UC Irvine in 1972, Leonard taught at the University of Michigan and the University of San Diego. Her interests include the socio-economic history and anthropology of South Asians, Asian Americans, and Muslim Americans. Her most recently published book is Locating Home: India's Hyderabadis Abroad.
