It was with great sadness that I learned that Carl Fields, BA ’73 had recently passed away. Carl, who was featured in the Fall 2002 issue of The Social Science Journal along with his wife, Charlean-Hartsfield-Fields, BA ’72, was a great friend to UCI and to the School of Social Sciences.

In his interview with The Social Science Journal Carl, who was Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Monterey Mushrooms, Inc, in Watsonville, CA, said, “At some point in your career you ought to reflect and give back." Carl gave back to UCI in many ways including his service as the President of UC Irvine’s Alumni Association. He also stated that “these are exciting times because we’re in the process of establishing a tradition, a legacy.”

Carl certainly helped to established traditions and a legacy at UCI and at the School of Social Sciences that will live well into the future. On behalf of the School of Social Sciences family of faculty, staff, students, and friends, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Carl’s family and our deepest gratitude for his many years of service to the School.
