Visiting Scholars

2011-12: Giulia Maria Dotti Sani is a PhD candidate in the Doctoral School in Sociology and Social Research at the University of Trento. With an MA with distinction in Social Sciences from the University of Milan, her research areas include family and social stratification. Her methodological interests include event history techniques, time budget analysis, multilevel modeling, and in-depth interviewing. She is currently researching the distribution of paid work and domestic chores in Italian households and its consequences for fertility behavior and social inequalities.

2009-10: Monica Boyd, the Canada Research Chair in Immigration, Inequality and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, visited Winter, 2010. Author of numerous publications, her current research focuses on immigrant inequality in the labor force, the migration of high skilled labor and related re-accreditation difficulties, the social construction of ethnicity, and the socio-economic achievements of immigrant offspring. She holds a research grant from the (Canadian) Social Science and Humanities Research Council on language proficiency and the economic incorporation of immigrants. Boyd is President, Academy II (Social Sciences) of the National Academy, the Royal Society of Canada; President, Canadian Sociological Association; and a long-time member of the National Statistics Council.

2008-2010: Leisy Abrego, a UCLA Ph.D. and now an Assistant Professor of Chicano & Chicana Studies at UCLA, visited as a UC Presidential Post-doctoral Fellow in the School of Social Sciences. Among her publications is "Economic Well-Being in Salvadoran Transnational Families: How Gender Affects Remittance Practices,” which appeared in Journal of Marriage and Family in 2009. She is working on a book, Distant Inequalities: Immigration Laws and Gender in Salvadoran Transnational Families.
