Social Sciences Dean’s Ambassadors Council Application 2008-2009

The Social Sciences Dean’s Ambassadors Council was established in the spring of 2001 as a novel attempt to unite the various disciplines under the School of Social Sciences. The Council’s overall mission is to serve the School of Social Sciences, UCI, and the community at large. The Council is a force of innovation within the School, and many other Schools are trying to replicate the Council within their own Schools.

With a student population over 5,000, the need for improved communication between students and faculty and across disciplines is more urgent than ever before. The Council seeks to foster School pride by hosting quarterly social events such as Café Social, Faculty and Film Night, the Faculty-Student Quiz Bowl, and Dean’s Day, to name a few. Ambassadors are responsible for developing and promoting the School of Social Sciences by creating and implementing social and academic events/programs. Ambassadors also have the honor of hosting visiting dignitaries and speakers at School-related events.

Additionally, the Council seeks to enrich the community at large by reaching out to high school students through its growing Global Connect program. Through this program, high school students are encouraged to pursue studies at the university level and, specifically, in the Social Sciences. The Council also encourages its members to benefit the community through philanthropic efforts such as gleaning for local food banks, collecting school supplies for Iraqi students through the Baghdad School Project, and walking in the annual Orange County AIDS Walk.

The Social Sciences Dean’s Ambassadors Council can be taken as a 3-quarter (2 unit pass/no pass per quarter) Leadership and Service Course. The Council/Course meetings will take place on Monday evenings, from 4:00-5:50 p.m. and attendance is mandatory.

Join the Council and make a difference!
